The SAP NetWeaver Application Server supports HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol), therefore enabling the execution of Web services and other Web applications. An open development environment is available for the programming of applications. The functions of the previous SAP Basis for all existing SAP applications are integrated. As of release 6.30, in addition to the SAP NetWeaver Application Server ABAP, the SAP NetWeaver Application Server also includes a SAP NetWeaver Application Server Java for creating J2EE applications. Both parts of the SAP NetWeaver Application Server can access a persistence layer that is independent of operating system and database system. The two parts are mutually accessible and are able to call each other.
